Capitalism

We're in the midst of selling off most of our large possessions. As we've kept tabs on the market preparing to buy and sell, I have been reminded of the odd and amazing nature of capitalism. Almost anything you have to sell, and I mean anything, you can find a buyer for. Have an AMC Gremlin rusting in your driveway? It's a pretty good bet someone's on the prowl looking to add to their collection of rusty old Gremlins. That 40-year-old green toilet setting in the garage? Well it just so happens there's a young professional in the city who's been looking for that exact toilet to complete their retro themed bathroom.

Seriously, it's amazing how many oddball items you can find on ebay, craigslist, etc... And the strangest thing is most of them sell. The idea that one man's trash is another man's treasure is certainly true. Let's hope there's someone looking for the items we have to sell. (Which aren't trash, but but are hopefully another's treasure!)

Quotes

A couple of good thoughts I ran across during some reading earlier today:

"It's easy to say no because we do not want to think through the implications of saying yes."

"The way you respond to disappointment with your authorities teaches your children how to be under authority."

The Beginning - Plans

This year promises to be an exciting year of change for our family. As mentioned in a previous post, we have always dreamed of things we would love to one-day do. For us, one of those things has been to own a resort type property. A place where we can run a business alongside the kids, but also facilitate ministry by hosting under-privileged kids, church groups, missionaries on furlough, etc. Well, through a long process of evaluation, we’ve decided the time is right for us to move forward with our dream.

Purging

One thing I've been reminded of as we go through closets and start packing boxes: It feels good to purge your house. Why are humans such pack racks? We've tried to do our best to keep the storage in our house to a minimum, but it's still amazing how much unused stuff we find. Even giving away whatever we can to the Salvation Army, it doesn't take long to fill up the trash cans each week.

Matthew has been working hard in the basement finishing the bathroom (that previously stored much of the junk from above), painting walls, and preparing for carpet. We've also repainted several of the upstairs walls. The plan is to have the house on the market at the start of February. Anyone looking for a house in Eastern Independence?

The Beginning - Dreams

Like everyone, Kyla and I have always had dreams of what we would love to "one day" do. I'm not so much referring to things that would be nice (like visiting Rome), but rather the things that perpetually churn in our minds and beg our hearts to long for a day yet to come. Things that some days feel as though they might never happen. Things that some YEARS feel as though they might never happen...

The van's for sale

We put our van up for sale last night. So far we've had about 6 scams offered to us! (The joys of selling online.) We're starting out with Craigslist, perhaps adding Cars.com and/or autotrader.com at some point. We've always had good luck with Craigslist. Hopefully that will continue as we have much to buy and sell over the next couple of months. If anyone is looking for a 2000 Toyota Sienna I know a wonderful van that's available for purchase!

Welcome

We are a few months into our new adventure, so this blog is a little late. No worries though. We'll take you through the events of the past few months over the next few weeks to help catch you up. Hope you enjoy following along with us!
